Power Development with Overhead Athletes

Last week I posted about how we don’t ever Bench Press volleyball players. In my opinion, the risk:reward just isn’t worth it.

The thought process doesn’t just stop with pressing movements. Our heavier power work (think Olympic lifts etc) is also a little then a non-overhead athletes. We don’t Snatch with a barbell or dumbbells due to the force on the shoulder. We don’t Hang Clean much anymore.

Why❓

As I said last week, most volleyball players go through thousands of arm swings a year. Not particularly shoulder friendly. The last thing I want to do is add more stress to a joint that is already over stressed. In addition, we can find plenty of other ways to train power that are arguably more shoulder friendly.

Instead, we’ll Landmine Split Jerk. We perform a lot of Trap Bar Jump Squats. We perform a lot of Kettlebell Swings and/or Band Resisted Kettlebell Swings.

Like I said last week, it’s a simple risk:reward scenario. The last thing we want is someone to get hurt as a result of their strength training program.
