🗣 Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge weight room person but, I think as strength coaches we have overvalued strength in the weight room as a tool to develop speed. We still need to lift for “armor building”, injury prevention and a host of other reasons but, I’m no longer sure how much effect conventional weight room strength has on speed past the beginner/intermediate level. – Michael Boyle
One of the biggest changes we’ve made in the last 2-3 years is consistently timing our sprints.
Before we’d perform drills like ball drops, the pro agility drill and side starts to improve speed…but we wouldn’t get near the intent we’d want to actually develop speed.
Now our speed work focuses on timed sprints where we get max intent on each rep, at least 2 times a week.
